A poetic VR installation about the body subject to gravity

16/11/23 - 09/12/23

Sarah Lauwers investigates how the human body bears and absorbs various events in this poetic virtual reality installation. The work mirrors the ‘prostrate’ prophet Elijah, depicted in the right panel of Bouts’ Triptych of the Last Supper.

A coproduction of Sarah Lauwers and BAC ART LAB KU Leuven, with the support of KU[N]ST Leuven and Het Depot.

In collaboration with sound artist Ewoud Van Eetvelde. With contributions by Anna Borodikhina (voice-over) and Ibtissam Boulbahaiem (the body).

This piece transports visitors to a city on the beach where a body lies prone in surrender to gravity. Tides that slowly ebb and flow, flickering light and handmade ceramic shells set the scene as a voice recites a text. Impressions of interpersonal communication interplay, juxtaposing the viewer’s body with its digital counterpart.

The work mirrors the recumbent Elijah, depicted on the right panel of Dieric Bouts’ The Last Supper. It is a body that has fled and is alone in the desert with a circus of thoughts as its sole company. This prone position invites viewers to listen to their own bodies with a new mindfulness, discovering how ‘the other’ affects them.

The experience is interactive and supported by a tactile 360° soundscape that brings the seaside city to life.
